The Sun Fired Off a Coronal Mass Ejection This Morning, Parts Headed Our Way

Coming off the second of twin peaks for this sunspot cycle this is as active as we get for cycle 24.

CHANCE OF FLARES: The odds of a strong flare today remain high. NOAA forecasters estimate a 70% chance of M-class flares and a 30% chance of X-flares on Sept. 9th. EARTH-DIRECTED CME: The magnetic canopy of sunspot AR2158 erupted during the early hours of Sept. 9th, producing a long-duration M4-class solar flare (movie) and a bright coronal mass ejection (CME). Coronagraphs onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory tracked the CME racing away from the sun at nearly 1000 kms....
